We haven't stopped fighting but the focus has shifted to future prevention. A new group and website are in the works.
Don't Stop
Saturday, August 25, 9:39 am
Added some links to the References/Media page.
It might seem like we could get back to normal but we cannot give up. The city of Dallas is planning to heavily spray Aqualuer 20-20 from trucks. In many ways, this is worse than the aerial spraying. Of course, aerial spraying sounds scary, and it is, but truck spraying is more concentrated and closer to us. However, its efficacy rate in killing mosquitoes is poor like it is with aerial spraying.
We are doing some things behind the scenes that we cannot disclose yet.
Visit the Take Action page to see what you can do!

No Aerial Spraying Tonight
Tuesday, August 21, 7:43 pm
Dallas will not be sprayed tonight. But the city has said that they will be stepping up their ground assault. I assume that means truck spraying rather than boots on the ground as it should be.
They have released two tip sheets (where were these at the beginning of mosquito season?):

We cannot let up though. Please continue to share the petition and write your city council representative. We do not want this to happen again next year.

Help Cover Crops at a Local Organic Farm!
Saturday, August 18, 9:00 pm
Eden's Organic Garden Center/CSA Farm is calling for volunteers to help them cover the crops to protect them from the airplanes dropping poison.
Here is the request:
CALLING ANY AND ALL VOLUNTEERS!!
What do you do when the State / County decides to douse your farm with pesticides? You have a party!! A cover the crops party that is!
The city was unable to fly over last night - oh darn - but has scheduled to resume Sunday night. That gives us time to get more things done here beforehand.
Bar-M-Ranch Grass-Fed Beef has graciously offered to bring tarps over here to combine with the plastic I have in an effort to get our crops covered before the now scheduled aerial spraying TOMORROW night! We'll spread it out over the actively growing, and now blooming, melons, squash, tomatoes and peppers.
He's bringing (grass fed) roast beef for sandwiches for us for lunch (and will pick up yummy organic Fresh Life Foods bread). You can byob or I'll have ice tea and water.
I expect this to take us no more than 2 hours with enough help (6 or so people working in teams).
NOTE TO ASTHMA or OTHER CHEMICALLY SENSITIVE FOLKS -
It rained pretty heavy out here last night clearing the air nicely, and I don't seem to smell the aqualure 20 20 that was used in the back neighborhoods anymore today. However, if you are at risk for respiratory problems, please bring a mask. I don't want anyone getting sick like I did Thursday night.
TIME - 10AM SUNDAY MORNING
WHERE - Eden's Organic Garden Center/CSA Farm
WHY - SAVE THE CROPS FROM POTENTIAL SPRAY WITH PESTICIDES
PLEASE RSVP SO WE HAVE ENOUGH FOOD/DRINKS/PLATES, ETC
THANK YOU!
ALSO _ IF YOU STILL HAVE LARGE APPLIANCE BOXES, PLEASE BRING THEM, TOO. SOMEONE GOING BACK TO THE CITY CAN BRING THEM TO OUR BEE KEEPERS.
If you would like to help, please RSVP to the facebook event.

Shouldn't be surprised--Dallas can't keep it's citizens apprised of the situation
Friday, August 17, 4:36 pm
I don't know how Dallas thought it could keep its citizens informed of their poison spray plans when they couldn't even do something simple like educate the public on preventing mosquitoes and personal protection. They are not updating their own website! http://www.wfaa.com/news/health/west-nile or http://cityhallblog.dallasnews.com/ but even that has conflicting info. I have no idea when or where is getting sprayed tonight. It seems like my neighborhood will be sprayed tonight because according to this map, I wasn't last night due to the rain. Good luck reading it. It was on city hall's facebook page...but not on their website.
Also, what I want to know is why are they starting to spray so early?! 9:00pm is too early! Many people are not home at 9:00! Especially on a Friday night! Honeybees are not in their hives! At both the Garland and Dallas City Hall Briefings, we were told the spraying would happen in the middle of the night. Since when is 9:00 pm the middle of the night?!
Here are two videos I shot last night showing that honeybees are not in their hive that early.
This was 8:12 pm. If I'm to get them ready by 9:00, I have to start that early. But I was unable to because they were still very active!
This is the hive after I covered them just after 9. I don't know how I'm going to get it done tonight before the planes start to bomb us.
This morning I found some dead bees outside of their tent. So either the city lied and there is drift and/or the company doesn't have an idea of where they sprayed, or the bees left early this morning to forage, came into contact with poisoned flowers and/or water, and died on their way home.
This operation is being completely mismanaged. The city clearly doesn't consider us important. Make your voice heard and email your city council and mayor. Also include the link to the petition to show how much it's growing!

For Beekeepers in the Aerial Spray Zone
Thursday, August 16, 6:23 pm
Here is some advice from two very experienced beekeepers in the Trinity Valley Beekeepers Association (Dallas).
From Christi Baughman:
Protect your hives by keeping the bees from flying out; this means blocking the entrance with something that allows ventilation, i.e. burlap, hardware cloth, even a handful of grass will keep them inside. Don't heavily cover them with anything that does not allow air circulation (like plastic or a tarp) or you will have dead bees from the heat. The entrance blockage should be very short-lived only for the period of time when they are spraying to avoid direct contact with bees and spray, evenings and mornings - not necessary at night.
From Alan Eynon:
It's my understanding that the city of Dallas will be spraying for mosquitoes
Thursday and Friday nights. This is aerial spraying, and probably fairly comprehensive.
I believe that the pesticide breaks down in sunlight, so it shouldn't be a problem
once the sun's up and giving us a good baking. My plan is to cover my bees the evening before - just drape an old sheet over the hives. This is mostly a better-safe-than-sorry measure. I'm not sure if I'll uncover
them Friday or just leave the sheet in place until Saturday morning.

Don't Stop Fighting!
Wednesday, August 15, 8:05 pm
We are all emotionally and physically exhausted but very appreciative of everyone who spoke out at the Dallas City Council Meeting or just came to support the cause. All of the speakers against the spraying were great! We sincerely appreciate it!
We cannot stop now. There are still things going on behind the scenes. This is not over. Please continue to share the petition, this site, or anything else related to the campaign.
Updates to follow tomorrow.
Garland Votes Yes to Arial Spraying
Tuesday, August 14, 6:27 pm
We just got back from the Garland Emergency City Council Meeting. We'd like to thank everyone who came out to support the campaign. Everybody that spoke out against the spraying did so in an intelligent manner. The few the spoke out for the spraying did not have any compelling arguments. One man did talk about his mother who is very sick and in a coma from West Nile. He was mad the spraying had not started sooner. We feel for him but do not agree that spraying would have prevented his mother from getting infected. Even the "experts" that spoke at the meeting said aerial spraying is not very effective. It is inconceivable how they could vote for it after hearing all of that.
More details from the meeting to follow.
Please come to the Dallas City Council Meeting tomorrow! There may not be any speaking spots left but we need the support from your attendance!

Why Aerial Spraying for Mosquitos is a Terrible Plan - by Gene Helmick-Richardson
As a licensed pest control operator in the metroplex for over 20 years and with a PhD in Entomology I think I can speak with some authority and knowledge on the proposed aerial spraying for mosquitoes to halt the spread of West Nile Virus in Dallas. For those of you who don't want to wade through the boring facts presented below, I oppose any widespread spraying of adulticides for mosquito control because it simply doesn't work. It is a waste of time and resources when we should be focused on scientifically proven strategies to control this problem. Now for the boring details.
First the problem. The CDC fact sheet on WNV ( CDC: West Nile Virus - What You Need To Know) explains that only 1 in 150 people who contract the disease develop serious illness and 4 out of 5 have no symptoms at all. Many reading this have been exposed already and don't even know it. Deaths are extremely rare and almost always are complicated by some underlying health problems. This is not a serious problem. Enough hysteria, please.
"Well, its not a problem unless you or your loved ones get this disease." True. It gets very personal. I don't want to get WNV either because I'm in one of those vulnerable groups (over 65). I demand that the government "Do something!" about this problem. But, what should they do?
As a taxpayer I want the biggest bang for my hard-earned buck. Since the days of DDT, the answer for any pest problem has been toxic chemicals. Many will remember the old hand-pumped sprayer that grandma sprayed around the house to kill mosquitoes. Now it is the aerosol cans from the grocery store. Targeted spraying for personal control is a personal choice, but follow directions and don't use them around me.
The real problem with dependence on toxic mosquito adulticides is that they treat only the symptom, not the problem. Dr. David Pimentel addresses this problem in his research in New York. He has an excellent article at: http:// www.stopwestnilesprayingnow.org /WNv&mosqctrl.pdf
So why then are our county officials and even the county medical society recommending this outmoded and unscientific approach? I really don't know. You see, they had a closed meeting and then came out to announce they were going to use aerial spraying. I would love to see or hear what went on there. (Continued below the link.)
Zach Thompson and his hard working crew had been going by the book to closely monitor WNV pools. They had been targeting hot spot neighborhoods with the traditional and largely ineffective use of Ultra Low Volume (ULV) truck mounted sprayers. He had been demanding proof that aerial spraying works in metropolitan areas to control WNV without endangering the population. Seems like a reasonable request for the man ultimately charged with keeping us healthy and safe.
Somewhat surprisingly, there are virtually no research studies on the actual efficacy of spraying adulticides for WNV control. The lone exception is the study done in Sacramento, California.
http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/14/5/07-1347_article.htm This is the study that I assume the Dallas County Medical Association mentioned in their recommendation to start aerial spraying.
Both Dr. Pimentel and I have some serious questions concerning the conduct, analysis, and conclusions of this study. Some have even called it "fatally flawed". As an initial effort to justify the expense and risks of aerial spraying for control of WNV, it is a much needed and absolutely necessary first step. However, it is a very shaky justification for exposing us all to dangerous pesticides.
There are other things to consider when we talk of aerial spraying. Besides the proven ineffectiveness in solving the problem, the effect on honey bees, butterflies, and even beneficial predators like dragon flies is well documented. Dr. Pimentel states that to control a mosquito population you should have 90% control. Reports of control range from 42% to 93% depending on a number of factors. If you fail to get 90% control, then the remaining 10%+ of survivors can quickly rebuild the population to original levels. Sometimes, due to the absence of beneficial predators, you may get a resurgence to even higher levels.
So, what do we do? Politicians are charged to "do something" and fortunately the correct thing to do is well documented. It starts with controlling the breeding sites. All stagnant water pools in the area should be located and either drained, treated with larvacides, or populated with mosquito fish. Educational programs like NY's Fight the Bite program and similar out reach programs have proven effective in preventing exposure and limiting populations of mosquitoes.
The manpower and expense involved in such programs, which include stricter code enforcement, free distribution of larvacides, and even door-to-door visits by volunteers or trained staff are not very high when compared to the cost of aerial pesticide application. And besides, they actually work.
Finally, and much more seriously, we are facing the potential for much more deadly threats of tropical diseases. If you fear WNV, you will be terrified of dengue fever and other serious mosquito borne diseases that are headed our way. If we empty our quiver on this mild threat we will be unarmed when a real threat arrives. Pesticide resistance is well-studied in mosquito populations. We will be creating "super mosquitoes" resistant to current pesticides.
For these and other reasons I feel that the use of aerial spraying in the Dallas metroplex is an unwise, ineffective, potentially dangerous, politically motivated over-reaction to a very mild threat. The decision was based on faulty research and may be counter productive at worst and a waste of limited resources at best.
Tell your government officials to stop now, before they poison your back yard.

News - Call to Action - This Tuesday and Wednesday!
Sunday, August 12, 4:14pm
Jenny Land from Concerned Citizens for Safer Mosquito Control contacted us about their actions behind the scenes. Here is what she wrote:
We will be raising these concerns regarding aerial spraying in front of the commissioners Tuesday morning (14th) and our seeking other speakers for the cause. You can contact Jenny Land at schimmysham@yahoo.com for further information.
Also, they will be at the Dallas city council meeting on Wednesday (15th). We would like as many people as possible to come out and speak. You do not need to say much more than a sentence. Strength is in numbers! Here is the procedure for signing up:
A person wishing to address the City Council must first register with the City Secretary and provide the following information: name, residence address, daytime telephone number, the subject matter to be presented, and whether the subject is on the current City Council meeting agenda. A person may register either in person or by telephone. The earliest a person may register for an upcoming City Council meeting is the beginning of the next regular business day following the previous City Council meeting. The deadline for registering to address the council is 9:00 a.m. of the day of the meeting. See also these revisions to City Secretary procedures for registering to speak.
For more information about the city council meeting procedures, please refer to the City Secretary's FAQ.
We really need people to turn out for this and let them know we do not want poison sprayed on us!
